MEIGS ACADEMIC MAGNET MIDDLE SCHOOL Advanced Art Syllabus
Objective: In addition to specific statewide visual arts standards and the integration of core content standardsof which I conform to, my personal philosophy of teaching is to focus on three primary areas. The first is to have students develop certain core technical skills. The second is developing critical thinking skills about all art. The last area of focus is to expose all my students to various art forms and the contexts in which the works were developed.
Preassessment:
When new skills or concepts are presented there will be appropriate diagnostic testing (drawing and/or writitng) related to the unit.
Required Materials: bring a sharpened pencil everyday (writing and drawing).
Throughout the year the Advanced Art students will participate in the Scholastic Art Awards and the Mayor’s Art Exhibit at the Frist.
Some of the Mediums the students will use throughout the nine weeks: drawing materials (color pencil, oil pastels, and markers), paint, clay, and mixed media.
LEARNING TARGETS
Media, Techniques and Processes Students will understand and apply media, techniques, and processes. **Summative Assessment: There will be an Altered Book art rubric posted throughout the year. One of the grades on the rubric is the use of materials which will be worth 25 points out of 50 points.
Evaluation Students will choose and evaluate a range of subject matter, symbols, and ideas.
Historical and Cultural Relationships Students will understand the visual arts in relation to history and cultures.
Reflecting and Assessing The student will reflect upon and assess the characteristics and merits of their work and the work of others. **Summative Assessment: critical analysis writing assignment of a work of art; grade based of: 10 points for voice (your own personal ideas), 10 points for conventions, and 5 points for having at lease three sentences.
Interdisciplinary Connections Students will make connections between visual arts and other disciplines.
Vocabulary**Summative Assessment: The students will apply the vocabulary words in their writing (critical analysis) assignments.
